Choosing a Newborn Photographer
Today I'm revisiting a subject that's near and dear to my heart: choosing a newborn photographer.
PARENTS. Did you know that the photography industry is 100% unregulated? That literally anyone can buy a camera and open shop? You'll have to do some research when searching for a newborn photographer because unfortunately, the burden is on you to determine who's qualified to photograph your baby.
I'm not knocking the newbie. Everyone's gotta start somewhere and I haven't been in this industry long, either. But I have invested thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours into my education and safety training. Not just because I want to create incredible portraits, but also because the thought of something happening to a baby during a session literally keeps me awake at night.
Just days after giving birth, riding that hormone roller coaster, you're going to hand your baby to the person you've chosen to create your baby's first portraits.
What do you know about them? Do you trust her? Is she someone you'll want to be around just a few days postpartum?
How about her portfolio? Does she create images that you'd be proud to display on your walls and in your family photo albums, to be admired for generations? Will she help you create those beautiful works of art, or are you on your own to figure out what to do with your images?
How will your client experience be? Does the photographer work with an assistant, or will you be expected to lend a hand during the session? Does she have a collection of props and backdrops for you to utilize? Does she have reviews and references from past clients? Is communication clear and helpful?
I hope these questions give you something to think about as you search for that perfect person to create these portraits for you. And you know what? Maybe that person isn't me, and that is 100% okay!
There are 76 babies born each week in the southern Maryland area alone, and I'm able to photograph just one baby per week - at the most. Not everyone will be my client, but if there is anything I can do to help you in your search, even if it means connecting you with another trusted newborn photographer - I am here to help you.
My biggest priority is the safety and comfort of these tiny humans. If you have any questions for me, please don't hesitate to reach out!
